Engaging you is easier than ever

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

While there are so many things, so many sites and apps that fight the loosing battle for your attention, have you thought how easy it actually is to engage you?

Give us a social platform with a promise that it is the next big thing, the facebook killer and we will drop what we are doing and flock there. It’s that easy to engage us online.

We all want to be connected and we all want to get the maximum out of social media and that desperation is the new way to gain our attention. Just present us something that promises to be the next big thing in the social media. This is all we need to rush to create a profile there.

Think about the social media platforms where you have created profiles. I have created profiles on so many sites like Flickr, 500px, Tumblr, Posterous, Pinterest to name a few. Every now and then I try to “reach out” to more people by posting links of by blogs there. But if I am not following links posted by someone else, why will someone follow my links and following someone else links, reading someone else’s rants take time. The key is you need to give more than you take, you need to hear before you can expect to be heard. If I can’t do that, then I am wasting my time there and my half-assed efforts are nothing more than beaming messages in space hoping an aliens on another planets will get it and will respond. If you can’t be a part of a conversation, just leave it..

CSS Reset

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

I have been writing HTML since the late 90s and have recently launched a Responsive redesign of my photo blog Picturejockey . I don’t know how could I have been blind enough to ignore CSS Reset.

Briefly what CSS Reset does it brings your website to the same baseline in all browsers. A lot of elements including type are rendered differently in different browsers. Some add a padding at the top of type, some have a different size and to ensure that your website has same appearance in all browsers you need CSS Reset.

To use it, you can create a separate CSS file and link it to your main CSS using the @import url tag.

Here is a link to Eric Meyers CSS Reset. You can download/Copy it from there.

Guwahati molestation – in the land of Duryodhan and Dushshasan

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

So what are the roles models of Young India – Duryodhan and Dushshasan

What is the attitude of Indians – The same as the people present in Kuru sabha, watching quietly a helpless woman being molested.

What are the motivators of modern India – Media and 15 minutes of fame. Making news “happen” by media (Simon Carver) in Tomorrow Never Dies seemed a little far-fetched but now we are seeing that happen. Thanks to people like Gaurav Jyoti Neog who denies charges of inciting the mob and claims he’s being framed but the presence of so many media people at place where something “newsworthy” was going to happen itself seems suspicious.

Is it really my fault if I forgot my homework?

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

Khana khana nahin bhoolte? (Do you ever forget to eat?) This is the question typically asked by teachers when kids used to tell them that they forgot to do the homework or forgot to bring their text book/notebook/reportcard.

I never had the courage to answer back when I was in school but now I’d like to tell any teacher interested in knowing the answer.

“No I don’t forget to eat. I don’t forget to seep, I don’t forget to watch TV, I don’t forget to play with my friends. These are all things I love and enjoy doing. If you can make my home work as enjoyable as watching TV or playing cricket with my friends, I’ll never forget it again”

The more things change, the more they remain the same Part 1 – The Money Lender

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

Have you seen Mother India? If yes, you must remember the character played by Kanhaia Lal who the local money lender. In that movie and countless other movies we have seen cruel money lenders and “zamindaars” and feel how difficult it must have been to live at a time like that, in a situation like that.

Now think about the present, the things are so much better and easier. When you need a loan you go to a bank and they tell you how much you need to pay back every month and you give them post dated cheques and everyone is happy. However have you considered how different the situations really are?

Lets do a little math here. You take a loan for a house and an average EMI for every one lack rupees you borrowed is about one thousand bucks a month for 20 years.

1000X12X20 = 240000

You have to pay 250% more than you borrowed from the bank. Till the time you repay the loan, your house is mortgaged and the bank can throw you out of the house and sell it of you are not able to pay back your loan. But is this all? No. The banks are known to employ “recover agents” who can come to your house or office and threaten you and generally make life difficult for you if you miss a installment, just like the “lathait” of the zamindaar.

So now think again, is the situation currently really so much better than what it was earlier?

Holding mutually contradictory thoughts

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

I read somewhere about the virtues of the ability to hold mutually contradictory thoughts. I have two contradictory thoughts and believe me, it is crippling

Thought One: To get maximum return on your investment, select an advisor whose fee is directly dependent on the amount of money you make.

Problem with thought one: The advisor is more likely to opt got high risk, high return options and can eventually blow all your money, unless you can work an arrangement where he shares the loss too.

Thought Two: To get good investment advice, select an advisor who works on a fixed fee.

Problem with thought two: To maximize his returns the advisor will sell you options where he gets maximum payback from the investment company. Example are insurance policies that give you poor results and thus offer a large commission to the agents.

Bottom line is you are on your own. Anyone out there to give investment advice is out there for himself, not yourself and is likely to be ready to screw for his personal gain.

Degrees of Thirst

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

Got this interesting infographic on water. There is a serious shortage of that and that is only going to get worse. If you are an Indian, I am sure you can recall the fights that take place at water tankers during summers when there is a water cut. Imaging something like that becoming a routine of life.

Ratan Tata on ethics

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

Read a quote by Ratan Tata in Hindustan Times today.

“I want the legacy to say we achieve the growth and the prosperity with the value system and ethical standards that we have tried to retain, and not succumb to the subjective pressures that exist to get things done.”
Ratan Tata

In the corporate world, I believe he is only one who can say this looking straight in your eyes.
