I saw the petroleum minister giving a statement on TV that “The price of petrol needs to be increased with immediate effect” Today the government has increased the price of Petrol by Rs.7.

There is a need to implement and enforce laws to curb corruption with immediate effect. There is also need to improve the law and order situation in Gurgaon – our rape capital with immediate effect. There is need for a lot of things with “immediate effect”. They keyword is in whose interest is the “immediate effect”. If it is in the interest of Government or people who make and support government, there will be swift action, otherwise there are a million excuses for inaction.

Delhi government is planning to introduce cheaper four wheeler alternatives to the auto rickshaws. They will be charging the same fare as the autos and there seems to be a lot of enthusiasm among some people who feel it will solve all the problems related to auto rickshaws

Among the sound byes quoted in Hindustan Times, there are quotes like “The auto rickshaw drivers charge what they want ad don’t ply by the meters and this will solve the problem” and “The auto drivers refuse to take the people and introductions of small cars will solve that problem”

Optimism is a good thing but this in wishful thinking. I don’t know how the small cars are going to solve the problems of overcharging and refusing to go on certain routes specially when the cars will be driven by the same people driving the rickshaws.

Traveling to Gurgaon seems so much nicer now as compared to a few years ago. The smooth roads, the long flyovers help you glide smoothly… till you reach the Toll Plaza. This is when you wonder why is it suddenly okay for the government to charge you for something that till now was free.

Sure the condition of the road is so much better and there are no signals where you have to stop and there are not many exit-entry points which help in avoiding congestion on the road but isn’t this something that any Highway and roads authority should strive to provide to citizens? I don’t know why this needs to be sponsored by the citizens as directly as paying toll. We are already paying enough taxes including road tax which should be sufficient to cover the cost.

Another thing I wonder is why the toll is Rs21 and not 20. Why do you have to add the complexity of 1 Rupee to a transaction that was already taking more time than what the highway is saving me?

I remember the milk queue at the Mother Dairy booth when I was a kid. People used to start queuing up hours before the booth opened. One would spend as much as a couple of hours in the queue and I remember taking turns with my dad and my brother. “Ok, I have taken a bath and had my breakfast so I will go to the booth and relieve dad so he can have a bath.”

After standing in the queue for two hours, we would get milk, but not more than 2 liters. I also remember how paneer and khoa would be banned from the market during the summer months as there was not enough milk to make those. I am not sure but I guess the government used to impose some sort of ban on those things. I am wondering if the restaurants used to server thinks like “shahi Paneer” or “kadhai paneer” during those months.

Today I don’t have to wake up early to buy milk; there is no queue I have to stand it. I can go to mother dairy as late as 11 in the morning and buy milk – not two liters, but as much as I care for. There still is plenty of milk left. There are also a lot of other things like the mishti doi – the sweet curd, the flavored milk, paneer to name some of those things.

I am only guessing but the population of India must have grown by at least 300million in the last 25 years. Again I am guessing but I don’t feel there is a proportionately higher increase in number of cattle or even a proportionate increase as compared to human population. Yet we don’t face any shortage of milk.

So what I want to know is “Who is giving us all the extra milk that has created such abundance” I am sure the cows and buffalos are not yielding so much more. I also want to be a milkman and want to produce milk without buying a cow or a buffalo.

Recently concluded Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi are a very good example of how short public memory is. The games are over and everyone is raving about them and how India has done well in games and I am sure there will be no further discussion about corruption and the swindled money. You know it is a little like calling in sick at work. Even when you know a person is lying about falling sick, no one says so because they know that they have done the same in the past and will be doing it in the future as well. Similarly all the politicians and bureaucrats who were thrashing CWG committee and Kalmadi know they have taken bribes and will be doing so in the future so they will not try to stir a hornet’s nest.

Shera is smiling and Suresh Kalmadi is laughing all the way to the bank. I am sure so are a lot of other bureaucrats and politicians.

Thinking about it, who is Suresh Kalmadi when it comes to relevance and influence. There is a Sports minister, there is a chief minister and lots and lots of people who are more influential than Kalmadi, it would be naive to think that only he got rich bu these games.

Spoke too soon it seems.

I guess I have spoken too soon. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has ordered a probe and it seems all is not going to be swept under the carpet. Let’s see what happens…

Trials for blue lanes are on. Today onwards if you are driving in the blue lane, the cops will stop you to educate you on the blue line (they may take a small tuition fee as well). If you are like me, you must have seen blue patches on some of Delhi roads and wondered what they are. Well, that is blue lane, reserved for Commonwealth Games traffic.

From 20th September to 16th October, if you are caught driving in the blue lane, you will be fined Rs 2000. I must say the amount of fine is substantial enough to discourage people from breaking that particular rule.

It Is good to have people in our city put on their best behavior when the guests are visiting. Won’t it be better if we observe the same discipline even when those visitors are not here. I know it would be difficult for us to have the same amount of discipline without a little push from the authorities.

How about having similar fines for people breaking other traffic rules like jumping red signals, driving with high beam on, unnecessary honking, driving on the wrong side and so on. And why just traffic, why not fine other offenders who litter the city or spit pan.

Wishful thinking?
