Noone gives a Fuck

Will the people get the message? is the question we ask ourselves after creating something we are proud of. Then we play it safe and make it simpler/more obvious so “more” people will be able to get the message. But guess what? The “more” people we target are not interested anyway. A small post by Seth Godin worth a read.

Thinking of redesigning your logo?

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

“It takes 100 Million dollars and 10 years to associate a symbol with a company.” This is what Steve Jobs said while recounting his experience of getting a logo designed for next computers.

“It takes 100 Million dollars and 10 years to associate a symbol with a company.”
-Steve Jobs

All the great logos we see have been through that journey which is why they seem so great, the Nike swoosh, the Adidas’ flower, Mercedes’ three pointed star and the spirit of ecstasy were nowhere as aspirational as they are now, after completing that journey.

Smart logo Redesign decisions

McDonald’s, Visa, Google, Domino’s, Pepsi didn’t have dramatic changes and the basic symbols remained the same and identifiable for their customers.

Apple had a dramatic change in their logo but that was before they had gone on their 10 year, 100 Million Dollars journey so the impact was minimal.

So the next time when you want to redesign you logo, think about it once again. Cosmetic change here and there are fine if the basic symbol remains identifiable but if you are planning to change it completely, be sure that you are ready for a 10 year journey and have budget of 100 Million dollars.

Facebook got a new logo

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

Facebook redesigns his logo. The old one is replaced by a new one that doesn’t look all that different from the old one. This is for a company that doesn’t even use its logo on its website.

New and Old Facebook Logos

“This new logo may look pretty similar to the average person, but it is regarded as a rather dramatic change to the typography-trained eye.”

It’s like me not noticing that my wife got a haircut. I sincerely hope Facebook won’t be mad at me for not noticing the change in the logo.

So who are queuing up to buy iPhone 6?

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

Human Nature dictates that we can’t stay excited over anything over a prolonged period. If we could, we would still be queuing up outside bakeries to buy sliced bread. What was new yesterday is taken for granted today.

iPhone had fans sleeping outside the store waiting for them to open on the day it was launched but this kind of anticipation doesn’t last long and experiencing a 6th edition of it is a little to much to expect.

Check out the video below and you will see that people queuing up are not iPhone enthusiasts, they are black marketers. They all are Chinese and most of them don’t even speak English. Also you will notice that none of them seems to be using a iPhone presently.

Check out this video.

The questions are all wrong

Watercolour of Narendra Modi

When a PM is live on national television, I guess the risk most people are willing to take is to appear shallow and witless and not being a career threatening wrong.

After his Teacher’s Day session with the kids Narendra Modi observed that the questions asked by the kids were beyond their age. Not mature for their age but I guess not relevant for their age. I guess what he was trying to say was that it was painfully obvious that the questions were not kids’ questions, they were prompted to ask them.

I want this client servicing guy in my team

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

This is what I think of when I see this ad. I mean who want a smooth talking guy like this who can sell this ad for houses to a builder which has what, a car? Look at the ad and count what is wrong with it. It is an ad for a house but looks like a car, it says no EMI but obviously mentions the EMI for the car which by the way looks like the price of the car.

poor-advertising

If this ad can be sold to a builder for selling houses, this can be sold to anyone selling anything on monthly installments.

Achchai ki chamak ya paise ki khanak

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

I have not seen this silver coated elaichi in any grocery shop, I have not known anyone who uses the silver coated elaichi in cooking or keep it in their kitchen and the only people who are even likely to try it are the smokers who don’t want the smell of cigarette on their breath.

Admit it Priyanka Chopra that this is nothing more than surrogate advertising for pan masala.

“Achchai ki chamak hoti hai par yeh aapne paise ki khanak sun kar kara hai.”

Walmart and other pickpockets

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

A few days ago, I was visiting a relative and there I met someone who was very excited about the FDI and retailers like Walmart coming to India. “Things will get cheaper once those malls open”. This was a statement not coming from a naïve teenager, or an uneducated simpleton or from someone in the government who stands to financially gain from this situation. I tried to tell him how this could not be as great as he might think. “The things will be cheaper but do you know how that is going to affect an economy that has exceptionally large number of entrepreneurs?”

Apparently he didn’t and couldn’t give a fuck to how small businesses always suffer in cities where these retails chains open. So I tried to tell him that even if the things are cheaper, you don’t end up saving money. “The layout of these store means you end up buying things you don’t need just because they are on a sale. I end up buying biscuits that I have to throw away after months when they are past their use by date or I end up buying things that I originally didn’t intend to buy like the ‘two for one’ macaroni that again doesn’t end up being used. You need to be exceptionally disciplined to go to a store like that and buy only the things that you need. I know for a fact that I save money if I buy groceries from a mom and pop shop even if the individual items are more expensive.”

To this he said “Well, people will buy only what they can afford, they are not taking money out of someone’s pocket” I realized that I have agitated him enough and continuing this conversation will end up only embarrassing our host so it was time for me to shut up.

However, here are a couple of info graphics that I sincerely wish I could share with that person.

Engaging you is easier than ever

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

While there are so many things, so many sites and apps that fight the loosing battle for your attention, have you thought how easy it actually is to engage you?

Give us a social platform with a promise that it is the next big thing, the facebook killer and we will drop what we are doing and flock there. It’s that easy to engage us online.

We all want to be connected and we all want to get the maximum out of social media and that desperation is the new way to gain our attention. Just present us something that promises to be the next big thing in the social media. This is all we need to rush to create a profile there.

Think about the social media platforms where you have created profiles. I have created profiles on so many sites like Flickr, 500px, Tumblr, Posterous, Pinterest to name a few. Every now and then I try to “reach out” to more people by posting links of by blogs there. But if I am not following links posted by someone else, why will someone follow my links and following someone else links, reading someone else’s rants take time. The key is you need to give more than you take, you need to hear before you can expect to be heard. If I can’t do that, then I am wasting my time there and my half-assed efforts are nothing more than beaming messages in space hoping an aliens on another planets will get it and will respond. If you can’t be a part of a conversation, just leave it..
