Trump – a blessing for Modi

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

Trump seems like a blessing is disguise for Modi as he has given the social network addicted indian people something to be outraged about and forget about demonitisation.
Do I hear Kejriwal saying “saazish hai ji yeh, sab mile hue hain.”

Facebook got a new logo

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

Facebook redesigns his logo. The old one is replaced by a new one that doesn’t look all that different from the old one. This is for a company that doesn’t even use its logo on its website.

New and Old Facebook Logos

“This new logo may look pretty similar to the average person, but it is regarded as a rather dramatic change to the typography-trained eye.”

It’s like me not noticing that my wife got a haircut. I sincerely hope Facebook won’t be mad at me for not noticing the change in the logo.

Engaging you is easier than ever

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

While there are so many things, so many sites and apps that fight the loosing battle for your attention, have you thought how easy it actually is to engage you?

Give us a social platform with a promise that it is the next big thing, the facebook killer and we will drop what we are doing and flock there. It’s that easy to engage us online.

We all want to be connected and we all want to get the maximum out of social media and that desperation is the new way to gain our attention. Just present us something that promises to be the next big thing in the social media. This is all we need to rush to create a profile there.

Think about the social media platforms where you have created profiles. I have created profiles on so many sites like Flickr, 500px, Tumblr, Posterous, Pinterest to name a few. Every now and then I try to “reach out” to more people by posting links of by blogs there. But if I am not following links posted by someone else, why will someone follow my links and following someone else links, reading someone else’s rants take time. The key is you need to give more than you take, you need to hear before you can expect to be heard. If I can’t do that, then I am wasting my time there and my half-assed efforts are nothing more than beaming messages in space hoping an aliens on another planets will get it and will respond. If you can’t be a part of a conversation, just leave it..

Sand Castle for “World Cancer Day” by Simon Smith

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

Phoenix Mall used to be one of the places I used to visit regularly and frequently when I was there. Wish I was there to witness this.

A UK based Sand Wizard – Simon Smith, World Masters People’s Champion had built a 10X10 Sand Castle in the Courtyard at High Street Phoenix for “World Cancer Day”. Simon Smith, a Cancer survivor himself has taken this initiative in association with Sand Cult – Sand Sculpting Company and Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) to show the importance of this Crucial Cause. His masterpiece was completed on February 4, 2012 – The World Cancer Day and was exhibited until February 12, 2012.

Check out some of these images.

Twitter killed the blogging star

Posted by Navin Harish - No Comments

The objective of having a blog was to express yourself. However there is little point in expressing yourself if you don’t have an audience. It is very difficult to have a readership and get people to come to your blog. However it is very easy to take your blog to where people are.

Facebook and Twitter are two such powerful tools. It is far easier to read a status update or a tweet than to visit a blog and read it. It’s perfect, you can know what others are doing in one site only and it is brief so it quick as well. The growing popularity of both sites is all the proof one needs.

Taking a step further, Happycog has removed the conventional “comments” from their blog. You can only comment using Twitter or by posting an entry on your own blog. Here is the link to Cognition, the blog of Happy Cog and why they have removed the comments feature.

Out to win a popularity contest

A friend on Facebook is not really a friend. A friend is someone who has spent considerable time with you in School/College/Work. A friend is someone who will pick you up from the airport even if it is at 2 am. A friend in someone who will let you sleep in his living room if you happen to visit the city. Very few of your online friend will do any of this for you because they hardly know you.

In such a scenario why do we feel proud to have a growing friend list on Facebook or Orkut. Why do we set out to beat our friends in a race to have more friends.

If I have 10000 friends on Facebook and it doesn’t realize to anything tangible except for Farmville and Mafia wars updates, I am not interested in it. I am okay with having half a dozen friend who are really my friends.

There are a couple of entries on the blog of Jeffrey Zeldman that I’d like to link. First is Stop chasing followers and the second is Like Buttons Falling From the Sky

Talking about Zeldman, he is the guy who taught me the virtues of standard compliant Markup. All I know about XHTML and CSS was learned by reading article in a site run by him – A List Apart and by looking the source code on his sites.

What do you prefer, a one night stand or a long term relationship?

What do you prefer, a one night stand or a long term relationship?
In the 90s people believed that you get an idea, you take it to a Venture Capitalist, get funding and start an online enterprise and then somehow the money would just shower. This assumption proved to be wrong for most people. For a minority it worked, a minority that had a sound strategy and a strong revenue model. You see, to make the sales register go “kaching”, you need to put in a lot of thought.

You have to remember there is a difference between broadcasting and holding a conversation and while you are broadcasting in other media, online you have to engage people in a conversation if you want them to listen to you.

We don’t learn from our history even if the history in only 15 years old. A lot of companies have the same assumption about social media, you make a page on Facebook and a profile on Twitter and you are done. Now just wait for the entire online community talking about you. But guess what, the online community doesn’t give a fuck about you. Sorry, but that’s how it is.

This problem is made worse by professionals (though it would be wrong to call them professionals) who are interested in a one night stand. There are plenty of those around you who will offer to make a social presence for you for chicken feed. They don’t see beyond the immediate assignment.

Just like 15 years ago when you needed a revenue model for you online enterprise to succeed, you now need a communication strategy behind your social marketing effort.

Before you plunge into any social activity on the net for your company, pause and think why and how you use the social media yourself. Once you look for those answers, you will realize the chances of your twitter feed with products updates are roughly the same as a snowflake in hell. The people (not many of them anyway) are not interested in changes in the interest rates of your investment plans. However they will be interested in product neutral advise and insights.

The first requires very little effort if any but the second requires a fair amount or research and time.

You have to remember there is a difference between broadcasting and holding a conversation and while you are broadcasting in other media, online you have to engage people in a conversation if you want them to listen to you.

You are not a radio, you are a human being.
